EM Microelectronic Introduces Two Low Power LCD Controller/Drivers

November 28, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

EM Microelectronic, the semiconductor company of the Swatch Group, announced two new low power LCD controllers/drivers, which can be used without other external components and are therefore easy to design in and very flexible.

With two different interfaces, the EM6121 and EM6126 are capable of driving a wide range of LCD modules. Due to their very low power requirements, they are well-suited for portable and mobile phone applications. The absence of flickering and uniformity of contrast across all dice in production earmarks these controllers for products with very high quality standards. The EM6121/26 have no external components, reducing the module size, while saving material and manufacturing costs. The two circuits are well-suited for small portable devices, requiring tiny modules and very low power consumption.

"The economy of external components allows for smaller display modules and gives manufacturers of consumer electronics devices increased design freedom," stated Mougahed Darwish, President of the Management Board of EM Microelectronic. "The low power requirements of the EM6126 are outstanding, and the EM6121 is even best in class."

Applications such as phones, MP3 players, smart cards with flexible LCD displays, point of sales systems, vending machines, utility meters and medical handheld devices can take advantage of these new products. The EM6121 is a controller and driver for character monochrome TN and STN LCD displays. It offers a driving capability of 26 rows x 80 columns addressable by the I2C or 3-wire interface. The circuit offers character generator memory for 240 ROM and 16 RAM characters. It includes functions such as cursor, blink, partial mode and scrolling. Because of its internal LCD voltage multiplier, oscillator and bias resistors, the EM6121 eliminates the use of external components.

The EM6126 is an ultra low power bit map controller and driver for full dot matrix monochrome STN LCD displays. It has a driving capability of 81 rows x 102 columns or 65 rows x 118 columns addressable with either of its interfaces. It is capable of internally generating an LCD voltage of up to 11V without the need of external components. Thanks to a factory laser trimming process, the EM6126 offers a high accuracy of frame frequency and LCD voltage. It includes functions such as partial display mode, digitally programmable multiplex rate, as well as selectable and temperature compensated LCD voltages.

The EM6121 and the EM6126 are both available in die with or without gold bumps.
