Digitally-Controlled Dual 2A Buck Regulator for Industrial and Networking Systems

November 12, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

Semtech Corporation today announced the SC284P, its smallest, dual independent 2A buck regulator with automatic power-save mode. The SC284P has an array of features that include seven digitally selectable preset output voltages (set independently, per channel), a power good signal, an internal 1.7ms soft-start and 100 percent duty cycle capability. The part greatly simplifies the implementation of power trees for industrial, networking and consumer electronics platforms due to its high 94 percent peak efficiency and small total board size.

“The compact 3x3mm package combined with pin selectable VOUTs, 2.5MHz switching frequency and a guaranteed maximum current limit to minimize inductor size provide the smallest possible overall solution size for a dual 2A regulator,” said Alan Burchfield, Product Marketing Director for Power Management Group. “The automatic power save adds a welcome boost in light-load efficiency versus competing devices that do not offer this feature, achieving greater than 70% efficiency down to 1mA loads.”

Key Features of the SC284P include: Vin range of 2.75V to 5.5V; Vout selectable between 1V and 3.3V; Iout up to 2A per channel; Efficiency up to 94% peak with automatic power save at light loads; 100% duty cycle capable; and 1.7ms internal soft-start.

Applications are expected to include: Security and surveillance NVR and DVR systems; Ethernet switches, WLAN access points, small cells; Set Top Boxes / Streaming Devices; and Printers, Projectors. The SC284P (order code: SC284PULTRC) is available immediately in production quantities and is priced at $0.62 each in 3,000-piece lots.
