Delta Launches SolutionE Concept of Telecom Power Systems

November 23, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Delta Electronics announced that it has launched SolutionE, a new concept of energy efficiency for telecom operators and network manufacturers. According to the company, the SolutionE concept of telecom power systems brings energy efficiency to the system level with cutting-edge control and monitoring functionalities, the most efficient power conversion modules, cooling options and renewable energy sources.

"The future effects of climate change can be influenced by decisions made today. The energy demand for telecom increases for example for the reasons that new technologies need site density increase and there is a lot to do to secure reliable telecom services in emerging markets. Delta’s corporate mission is to provide innovative, clean and efficient energy solutions for a better tomorrow, and our SolutionE aims at minimizing the increase of energy consumption despite the growing business," said Kelvin Huang, Head of Telecom Power Solutions at Delta.

SolutionE is Delta’s new concept designed to provide uninterruptible power in the most energy-efficient way possible. According to the company, it brings together Delta’s telecom power products that enable very significant energy savings and revolutionizes the market standards by enabling both direct and indirect energy savings. The products featured in the concept include:

– Rectifiers: EnergE rectifiers convert the power with minimum losses. The site direct energy consumption savings are up to 8 % compared to old generation models. New products exceeding 96% efficiency represent leading edge state-of-the-art technology. Indirect savings are reached by compact size, and e.g. AC overvoltage protection features.

– Cooling: Site cooling can count up to 50 % of the total energy consumption. The advanced cooling features of OutD systems create energy savings up to 80%, meaning that the whole site energy consumption is 40 % down.

– Controllers: Advanced controllers enable the use of smaller diesel generators and create energy savings of over 30% in fuel. Additional diesel saving over 50% can be achieved as a result of smart planned power system management during mains failures. Cumulative savings are reached by less site visits thanks to remote monitoring and controlling features, which support the operator to proactively and better manage the maintenance processes.

– Site monitoring and control systems: In addition to flawless current feed, SMCS enables energy savings as a result of better protected equipment in areas with very unstable AC utility, which leads to less site visits. This is combined with the generator monitoring, control and maintenance features provided by the controller.

– Renewable hybrid power systems: Powering sites with renewable energy sources, like solar, RenE renewable hybrid systems enable energy savings of even up to 100% in theory and secure reliable telecom services also in remote areas.

"Our SolutionE concept is very flexible for customer needs. Depending on the site location, basic infrastructure or current powering concept, as an example, our customers can choose the certain elements from our concept to improve their site energy efficiency, or then build up everything based on the whole range of SolutionE products and reach the very smallest environmental footprint and operational costs," said Hans-Peter Glauser, Global Product Manager at Delta. "At the lowest the site energy savings are 6-8% based on the EnergE rectifiers, but at the highest the energy savings are close to 100%. When choosing the whole range of SolutionE products also the capital expenditures goes down, e.g. smaller gensets, smaller cooling devices in outdoor installations, solar power needed is lower when a customer has chosen EnergE rectifier, our state of the art PSC 3 power system controller, and hybrid cooling. As the environment and the customer needs are always unique, what we do at Delta is that we analyse the situation with our customer and recommend the optimum suitable solution for each purpose."
