DC-DC Converters and Controllers Reduce Costs and Improve Operational Efficiencies
Eltek ASA announced new 24-Vdc and 48-Vdc wide-input dc-dc converter modules for use with Eltek systems that offer dual voltage power conversion, including the Flatpack2 Trilogy and the new Modular HE with Smartpack2. At the same time, Eltek announced integration of its Smartpack2 controller in the Modular High Efficiency (HE) dc power system. The Modular HE DC Power System is designed for central office and wireless basestation applications, and it now offers expanded onsite and remote monitoring functionality. The Smartpack2 is built on a proven and reliable software platform with a streamlined user interface and increased program memory for improved functionality and advanced statistical reporting.
Telecom sites and industrial facilities often have a need to support multiple dc output voltage levels. With Eltek’s new converters, it’s possible to have both ac-dc power conversion and dc-dc voltage conversion in the same system. This saves the customer the cost of buying a specialized system and taking up valuable space for a small segment of the load. The new converters feature a wide voltage input range, from 18-Vdc to 75-Vdc, to cover an extensive range of applications. Typical applications for such dc-dc converters are in multiple output voltage systems from a single battery bank or voltage stabilizers for demanding loads.
“These new dc-dc converters fill an important gap in the Eltek product portfolio,†said David Leal, Eltek Vice President of Sales for North America. “In many applications, available space and budget are key issues and these new dc-dc modules can help customers save both.â€
The new converters can be managed by the Smartpack2 controller, which monitors and controls all active components in the Flatpack2 Trilogy and Modular HE systems. The controller has a large display for on-site setup, status and log access. These functions can also be set and monitored remotely.
The Modular HE DC power system features a distributed architecture with 1200A (24V) or 1250A (48V) capacity, plug-in breakers up to 600A, optional low voltage battery disconnect (LVBD) and a 15U distribution panel. The system houses up to 20 Flatpack2 rectifier modules. With the optional Flatpack2 dc-dc converter shelf, the Modular system can support multiple DC output voltage levels in the same chassis.
“The best way to expand on the flexibility of the Modular System is to add the state-of-the art monitoring and control functionality in the Smartpack2. Now carriers can have even more confidence in using the Modular System in CO or remote applications,†said David Leal, Eltek Vice President of Sales for North America. “The advanced features and functionality provide technicians with unprecedented system information and control capabilities both on-site and from remote locations.â€
The Smartpack2 controller offers system configuration, rectifier/charge control, alarm monitoring, testing and event logging. Battery string, load and I/O monitors are controlled via a powered controller area network (CAN) bus interface to support wide expansion of the underlying DC power system and system monitoring.
For on-site technicians, a large 3.2†high-resolution color display is the main point of control. It permits easy navigation through an intuitive user menu that enables full system set-up and configuration. Key system status parameters are readily displayed: triggered alarms, rectifier current, load current, battery voltage and event logs. A variety of language options is available that can be changed at any time.
For remote operations in large multi-site systems, Smartpack2 provides secure monitoring and control via the Internet. System status, parameter modifications, triggered alarms and other system variables can all be managed off-site. In addition, features such as battery lifetime estimations, fuel consumption through tank level measurement, renewable energy usage and generator runtime help with remote site service and upgrade planning. Both the 24V and 48V converters and the Smartpack controller are available now from Eltek’s worldwide sales force.
