Coleman and Freeplay Offer Self-Sufficient Products

July 02, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Freeplay Energy Group (London) and Coleman Company Inc. (Wichita, KS) have co-developed the new Coleman Sentinel flashlight and Outrider radio, which are powered by Freeplay's self-sufficient energy technology. The lightweight Sentinel flashlight and Outrider radio offer a choice of rechargeable battery or wind-up power. Each unit features a built-in winder handle for use when electrical outlets are unavailable.

The Freeplay alternator unit incorporates rare earth magnets and converts human energy into electricity. Energy is stored in the internal batteries that have been tested to more than 5,000 human-use cycles without any performance degradation. The Coleman Sentinel flashlight weighs 12oz and provides 30 minutes of ultra-bright light or five hours of regular light when fully charged. The wind-up system offers up to eight minutes of light on normal beam for each 30-second, hand-cranking session and includes an LED charge-level indicator to designate the best winding speed.

The Coleman Outrider radio weighs under 2lbs and will operate for 25 hours when fully charged. On average, 30 seconds of winding will provide approximately 35 minutes of playtime at normal volume. In addition, the radio may be charged by solar power in direct sunlight through a solar panel on top of the unit.

The suggested retail price of the Sentinel flashlight is $39.99 and the Outrider radio is $49.99.
