Cherokee Unveils CBE1448G1 IBC Converter

February 09, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Cherokee International LLC (Tustin, CA), a manufacturer of switch-mode power supplies, announced its first-to-market, eighth-brick, isolated, C-BUS converter - an intermediate bus converter (IBC) operating at 94 percent efficiency to deliver 197 W/in³ and 14 A in a 12 V output configuration. The narrow-input (42 Vdc to 53 Vdc) quasi-regulated converter has an output-voltage range of 9.7 Vdc to 13.3 Vdc. Measuring just 0.89 in x 2.3 in x 0.417 in, the CBE1448G1 converter is designed to overcome many of the board-level power-distribution issues of high-functionality silicon ICs used in optical networks, routers, servers and storage switches.

The CBE1448G1 supports two-stage, dc power conversions in 48 V systems, which in turn provide power to multiple, non-isolated, point-of-load converters. The proprietary driver used within the dc transformer minimizes switching losses to maximize efficiency and output current while minimizing the component count and converter cost. The CBE1448G1 converter meets basic insulation requirements of EN60950 and offers remote on/off, over-temperature protection, output over-current and over-voltage protection, and input under-voltage protection. Other features include 1,500 Vdc input-to-output isolation, no minimum load requirements, constant-frequency operation for predictable EMI characteristics, low ripple and noise, and auto restart after fault shutdown.

The C-BUS CBE1448G1 converter is available in both positive and negative logic modules, and is priced at $34 for quantities of 1,000 units. Samples are available now.
