Cherokee Offers Polaris 2 Half-Brick DC-DC Converters

New Products May 11, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Cherokee International LLC (Tustin, CA), a manufacturer of switch-mode power supplies, announced its next-generation Polaris 2 half-brick dc-dc converter family, which is suitable for current-hungry requirements for leading-edge telecom, router/switch, networking, wireless local loop, RF transmission, and ATE test equipment.

The Polaris 2 converter family delivers 120 A for the 1.2 V, 1.5 V, 1.8 V versions, and supports 2.5 V at 100 A, 3.3 V at 80 A and 5 V at 55 A. The Polaris 2 is an isolated, fixed-frequency design that uses synchronous rectification to achieve high efficiencies up to 92% and operates without de-rating at practical operating conditions of 300 LFM airflow at 50 °C. Measuring 2.42 in x 2.4 in x 0.45 in, the Polaris 2 has an ultra-fast loop response to minimize peak deviations — achieving a fast recovery time for powering next-generation chipsets. The single-output converters have a high current density of 46 A/in³ — occupying less real estate at the system level — and can handle input voltages from 36 V to 75 V, with 48 V as the nominal voltage.

The Polaris 2 family meets an input-voltage transient requirement of 100 V for 100 msec, as well as insulation requirements for EN60950. The 120 A Polaris 2 half-brick family is available in open-frame or base-plate models and is priced at $99 for quantities of 1,000 units. Samples are available now.
