Campbell Collins Introduces Medical Grade AC-DC Power Modules for Safety Critical Applications

February 10, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Campbell Collins Ltd. has introduced a range of ac-dc power modules from MTM Power of Germany which are specifically designed for safety critical medical applications.

Available with output power levels of 15, 24, 48, 60, 75 and 100W, the PMmed and PCMmed range of modules enable world-wide operation with an input voltage range of 90-264Vac, 50/60Hz. Output voltages of 3.3, 5, 12, 15, 24, 36 and 48V are available, making the units suitable for a wide variety of applications including MRI, X-ray, CT and PET scanners, blood analyzers, patient monitors, and robotic surgical devices. With leakage currents of less than 100µA and Isolation Levels of 4kVac, the units exceed the requirements of IEC/EN/UL60601-1 and IEC/EN/UL60950-1.

Efficiency levels for the units are as high as 90%, enabling extremely high power densities and small package sizes. The construction techniques used are designed specifically with ruggedness in mind, being vacuum encapsulated in a UL94-V0 rated enclosure which also allows for excellent thermal transfer, particularly when using the optional chassis mount case (PCMmed). Operating temperature range is from -25 to +70°C, and the devices are designed for free convection cooling.

The devices include overload protection which allow for continuous short circuits to be handled without damage, and also provide hold-up times of up to 50ms. EMI and RFI standards such as EN60601-2, EN55011 (Class B), EN61000-3-2 and EN61000-3-x are also met by the modules without any external circuitry or compromise to leakage currents.
