Bias Power Introduces Small Switching Power Supply

September 04, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

BIAS Power Technology Inc. introduced its BPS Series micro-size switching power supply which is designed for standby mode and other low-power supply applications, and allows designers to easily solve space and efficiency problems. Available in either 1/2 or 1W models, this new supply operates with nominal 75% efficiency. Up to 56% smaller than predecessor Bias models, it measures just 1" x 7/8" x 1/2".

Applications for the BPS are widespread, including powering remote and networked sensors, power-line carrier, relay drivers, test equipment, IR receivers, building automation, audio, video, security, ac power adapters and bias supplies. It is suitable for standby mode applications in appliances and consumer electronics, providing power to system clocks, processors, IR remote receivers, membrane keypads and LED panel lighting. With a no-load power consumption of less than 30mW, the BPS series efficiently handles the widest possible load variations.

The Bias Power BPS is based on a patented circuit design that so effectively eliminates line EMI that no input filtering is required. This is achieved by isolating the input path for the duration of the conducted noise. The circuit also maximizes conversion efficiency and effectively regulates output voltages, even over 85 to 265 Vac. Outputs of 8, 14 and 8 & 5 Vdc are available. An attribute of the overall assembly is extremely rugged construction, making the BPS well-suited for portable and harsh environment applications. The BPS is a ready-to-apply solution, so there's no need to re-invent the wheel with larger home-grown switchers. BPS Series Power Supplies are available for immediate delivery and priced under $6 in small OEM quantities.
