AVX Introduces Tantalum Capacitors For Embedded Systems Applications

December 10, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

AVX Corp. announced that it has developed a broad range of tantalum capacitors suitable for embedded control systems. Used in a wide variety of ECU (Electronic Control Units), embedded systems operate industrial, telecommunication and other applications where long operation time and stability of parameters are the essential design parameters. Embedded systems are designed to operate continuously for years without failures and to recover automatically if a failure does occur.

Stable, noise free operation depends on selection of the right type of a filtering capacitor. According to AVX, Tantalum capacitors have become the preferred choice for embedded system applications thanks to their stability and reliability based on efficient self-healing systems and high capacitance values in small dimensions. The designs of the latest embedded computers in radar, sonar, digital signal processing offered by leading manufacturers of embedded systems contain a high number of tantalum capacitors, typically five to 70 per a singe board. This example is said to prove that tantalum technology fully meets the demanding requirements for reliability, stability and performance in high power applications.

Recently released new mirror-design multianode tantalum capacitors in TPM D-case with 2.9mm height are said to provide an almost identical ESR level compared with traditional E-case multianode construction. The symmetrical design of 2 horizontal anodes allows the reduction of inductance down to 1nH, which is said to be 50% lower than with standard single anode construction. The lower ESL shifts the resonance frequency up to 500kHz, which is said to enable a more effective usage in today’s favorite switching frequency range 250 – 500kHz. Due to the higher power dissipation of mirror design D-case, it is stated that the capacitor can handle higher ripple current compared with the single anode design.

In some designs, low profile components are a demanded feature. The horizontal layout of anodes has an additional benefit of next downsizing potential down to 2mm profile of TPM Y-case multianode capacitors suitable for height limited application.
