10A/12A, 100V AEC-Q Super Barrier Rectifiers Offer Drop-in Replacement for Schottkys

May 23, 2019 by Scott McMahan

Diodes Inc. released a series of automotive-compliant super barrier rectifier (SBR®) diodes. These SBR diodes employ patented and proprietary technology and according to the company can significantly reduce power loss and lower operating temperatures in automotive applications.

The rectifier diodes can serve as a recirculating diode, a dc-dc converter, a switching diode, a blocking diode, ac-dc converter, and a polarity protection diode. The AEC-Q qualified diodes can improve the efficiency and reliability of daytime running lights. (See typical application schematic for daytime running lights above).

The SBR10M100P5Q (10A, 100V) and SBR8M100P5Q (8A, 100V) feature low forward voltage drop (0.88V), ultra-low reverse leakage (2µA), and have fast switching speeds (16ns).

According to Diodes, SBR technology is a drop-in replacement for existing Schottky diodes. The company compared the efficiency and case temperatures of the SBR10M100P5Q with a leading competitor, 10A planar Schottky diode, in a typical buck-boost converter circuit driving DRL LEDs. The rectifier diode was tested over a range of voltages and ambient temperatures. It maintained up to 5% better efficiency than the Schottky competitor and showed a consistently cooler case temperature up to +5ºC.

Together, these features can reduce system efficiency loss up to 30% compared to Schottky barrier diode technology and reduce energy consumption and running costs, the company says. Producing less heat ultimately lessens the cost of cooling components and provides a more reliable end product.

The company says it can deliver immediate benefits without any costly redesign, and it reduces time-to-market for existing systems that must meet more stringent limits.

In addition to DRL, the SBR10M100P5Q and SBR8M100P5Q can be deployed in other applications because they deliver superior efficiency and reliability performance over Schottky diodes in polarity protection, switching, and blocking, as well as ac-dc and dc-dc conversion.

The SBR10M100P5Q and SBR8M100P5Q SBR diodes are automotive-compliant to AEC-Q101 and can be supplied in accordance with PPAP requirements. They are available in the company's efficient PowerDI®5 package.
