May 27, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

austriamicrosystems AG (Graz, Austria) has developed a highly integrated, real-time, programmable, power management unit (PMU), the AS3601, which is designed for mobile applications such as cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras, etc., providing wireless device manufacturers with a versatile power management IC for mobile devices.

The AS3601 integrates all the major functions for hand-held devices, including dc/dc step-up and step-down converters, low dropout voltage regulators, a battery charger/fuel gauge, general-purpose I/Os, white LED drivers, and an audio amplifier, all on a single chip. The on-chip linear regulators feature high analog performance regarding noise (<30µVrms from 100Hz to 100kHz), line/load regulation (<1mV static and 70db at 1kHz). The on-chip programmable battery charger supports various functions, including constant current, constant voltage, and trickle charge supporting lithium and nickel-metal hydride batteries. The integrated gas gauge measures the battery’s capacity status through an integrated AD converter.

The AS3601 PMU is available in a 7mm² x 7mm² QFN48 package. An evaluation kit, including engineering samples, an evaluation board and efficient software to speed up IC evaluation, is available upon request. Pricing for the AS3601 is $1.50 for high-volume production quantities.
