Analog Devices Unveils Energy Meter ICs for India

November 16, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Analog Devices Inc. unveiled two families of single-chip energy meter ICs with intelligent battery management for energy meters. The ADE7169 was designed for Indian utility requirements. The Indian energy market is estimated to include 10 million single-phase energy meters.

"The ADE7169 is scheduled for release early next year. We anticipate meter manufactures to take up to six months to complete their design, quality and reliability evaluations and testing. Meters with the ADE7169 will be available to utilities in the second half of 2007," said Mark Strzegowski, Analog Devices' Senior Product Manager.

The ADE7169 chip performs functions which previously required as many as six discrete ICs. It includes intelligent battery modes to sense temperature changes, operate an LCD readout and perform other functions such as supplying voltage during power outages. The company claims that the chip uses at least 40% less power than other solutions.

The ADE7169 is available in 64-lead low-profile quad flat packages and is priced under $3.00 per unit in 1,000-piece quantities.
