Alpha and Omega Semiconductor Releases Family of UltraSO-8™ Power MOSFETs

June 13, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor, Inc. (AOS) announced that it has released a family of high performance UltraSO-8™ power MOSFETs. The UltraSO-8™ power MOSFET series is aimed at applications such as notebook and desktop PCs, servers, graphics cards, gaming consoles, Li Ion battery packs, and point of load dc/dc power supplies.

The footprint of the UltraSO-8™ is compatible with the industry standard SO-8 package, making it convenient for designers to use. It offers the added benefit of a 20% improvement in thermal performance, thus offering the system designer an alternative to the bulkier DPAK package for applications that exceed the power dissipation of the traditional SO-8 package. An additional benefit of UltraSO-8™ is that its package inductance is three times lower than that of the DPAK, allowing the device to switch more efficiently at higher frequencies in dc/dc applications; this helps to reduce the size of other external components and the total size and cost of the power supply.

With the UltraSO-8™, AOS combined the thermal and cost benefits of the DPAK with the small size and high switching performance of the SO-8 package. This improved thermal and switching performance allows the UltraSO-8™ family to power the latest generation of high power CPUs in the smallest printed circuit board area.

The AOL1408 and AOL1414 are now available. Samples are available from stock with production quantities available in 8 weeks. Pricing starts at $0.96 and $0.76 for 1,000 units, respectively.
