Allegro MicroSystems Offers A8431 Boost Converter

December 27, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Allegro MicroSystems Inc. (Worcester, MA), a supplier of mixed-signal power semiconductors and hall-effect sensors, has developed a high-frequency boost converter with constant current output that is suitable for driving white LEDs or similar loads. The A8431 is similar to Allegro's A8430, but has an over-voltage protection feature (32 V) and is packaged in a smaller 2 mm x 3 mm (0.75 mm high) six-lead QFN.

The A8431 features 2.5 V to 10 V input voltage, the ability to drive up to four LEDs at 20 mA from a 2.5 V supply, the ability to drive up to five LEDs at 20 mA from a 3.0 V supply, a 1.2 MHz switching frequency, a 300 mA internal switch current limit, LED brightness control, and load current set by an external feedback resistor.

The A8431 is supplied in a 2 mm x 3 mm QFN-6 package, and is priced at $0.53 per unit for quantities of 10,000.
