New Products Sep 09, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Active Power Inc. (Austin, TX), a developer of battery-free, power quality products, announced the production release of its first line of mid-range power products, the CleanSource® uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. With four models in power ratings from 65kVA to 130kVA, the new offering provides an environmentally friendly, low-maintenance solution for assuring continuous power in a variety of applications from process control to broadcasting to data processing.

Using proven flywheel technology, the CleanSource models address critical power needs with advanced power conditioning capabilities that include voltage regulation, transient protection and harmonics cancellation. When coupled with a standby generator, the CleanSource UPS creates a continuous power system that protects sensitive loads against short power disturbances as well as extended outages. Combining a rugged steel flywheel with advanced electronics, the system stores kinetic energy in a constantly spinning, quiet, low-friction, solid-steel disc. Stored energy from the flywheel is instantly converted to electricity that powers critical loads during utility disturbances or until a standby generator takes over. Featuring high-efficiency operation and overload capability, the systems need not be oversized to accommodate high startup current demands from protected equipment, and use only a fraction of the space of a comparable battery-based system, with dimensions of 34in x 58.6in x 78in (865mm x 1,488mm x 2,080mm).

Sophisticated design coupled with battery-free operation and efficiency as high as 96.5% assure low life-cycle costs for the CleanSource products by minimizing maintenance requirements, lowering electrical consumption and reducing cooling needs. In addition, the CleanSource products operate comfortably from 0°C to 40°C with no degradation in performance. Featuring low input harmonic distortion and outstanding overload capacity along with high efficiency, the systems work seamlessly with standby generators, eliminating the need to oversize. The CleanSource battery-free systems are available now, and have a lower total lifecycle cost than comparable battery-based systems. Available options include GenSTART™ 24V genset start power, remote notification and monitoring, CSView™ real-time monitoring software, remote emergency power off, four-wire input and output, MODBUS and SNMP interfaces, internal maintenance bypass, and OSHPD pre-approved seismic Zone-4 anchoring capability.
