20: Lower-Cost FERDs can replace Sync FETs in Battery Chargers

STMicroelectronics NV has added a new family of Field-Effect Rectifier diodes (FERD) that offers a unique trade-off between low forward voltage drop (VF) and low leakage current (IR) that allows designers of equipment such as battery chargers and notebook adaptors to meet the most stringent energy-efficiency standard requirements without the expense of using synchronous rectification techniques. Standards such as Energy Star 6.0 test the limit of what can be achieved with conventional Schottky diodes in battery chargers and notebook adaptors. Synchronous rectification provides superior performance but at significantly greater cost. more

19: Monolithic GaN Half Bridge Enables 90% Efficient 12V-to-1.2V 25A POL

Efficient Power Conversion Corp. (EPC) announced the EPC2100, the first commercially available enhancement-mode monolithic GaN transistor half bridge during the morning plenary session at Darnell's Energy Summit. By integrating two eGaN power FETs into a single device, interconnect inductances and the interstitial space needed on the PCB are eliminated. This increases both efficiency (especially at higher frequencies) and power density, while reducing assembly costs to the end user's power conversion system. The EPC2100 GaN power transistor offers power systems designers a solution that increases efficiency and power density for point-of-load (POL) systems approaching 93% at 10A, and over 90.5% at 25A when switching at 500 kHz and converting from 12 V to 1.2 V. more

18: Digitally-Controlled Synchronous Rectifiers Replace Schottkys

Dialog Semiconductor plc today launched its iW671 synchronous rectifier designed to enable small, higher power adapters for mobile devices. The iW671 replaces the secondary-side Schottky diode used in conventional power supplies with a more efficient MOSFET and works with Dialog's iW1786 or iW1787 primary-side controllers to deliver efficiency greater than 88%. This enables the higher power density needed for more powerful, small form-factor adapters without exceeding thermal limits. more

17: 2W to 60W Encapsulated AC-DC Power Modules

Delta Electronics, Inc. has introduced AA, AB, AC series of standard ac-dc power modules, which covers all the popular industry-standard sizes and footprints. The output power of the fully-encapsulated ac-dc power modules ranges from 2W to 60W. These power supplies accept a universal input voltage (85-264V, 47-440Hz) with built in EMI/EMC. They can withstand 3000Vac isolation voltage (Minimum 4000Vac for medical product). The output voltage is from 3.3V up to 48V. There are dual- and triple-output modules for certain output power range. more

16: High-Efficiency AC-DC Converter IC with Integrated PFC Control Function

ROHM Semiconductor has announced the development of a high-efficiency ac-dc converter that integrates PFC (Power Factor Correction) and QR (Quasi-Resonant) controllers into a single package, making it suited for 100W-class equipment such as TVs and industrial power supplies. The BM1C001F is the first to incorporate an ON/OFF setting function and new PFC output control method within the PFC controller. This improves efficiency during light loads and significantly reduces standby power. Power supplies utilizing this IC are ensured compliance with Energy Star 6.0, the latest international energy standard. more

15: 75V MOSFETs Feature Rds(on) as Low as 1.8 milliOhms

International Rectifier Corp. (IR) today announced the expansion of its StrongIRFETâ„¢ MOSFET portfolio to include 75V devices for a wide variety of industrial applications including power tools, Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) inverters, dc motor drives, Li-Ion battery pack protection, Hot-Swap and Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) secondary-side synchronous rectification. The new family of 75V StrongIRFETâ„¢ power MOSFETs features ultra-low on-state resistance (Rds(on)) for improved performance in low frequency applications, very high-current carrying capability, soft body diode, and 3V typical threshold voltage to improve noise immunity. Each device in the family is 100% avalanche tested at industry highest avalanche current levels to ensure the most robust solution for demanding industrial applications. The devices are offered in through-hole packages. more

14: Board-Mounted AC-DC Power Supplies Deliver up to 25W

Cosel Co. Ltd. announced the release of the new TUHS series ultra-small board-level single-output ac-dc power supplies. This new series is available in 4 power ratings, 3W, 5W, 10W and 25W in a fully-potted package. The TUHS 3 Watt is only 28.7 X 17.5 X 12.7 mm (1.13 X 0.5 X 0.69 inches). The TUHS series features universal input (85- to 264-Vac) with standard outputs of 5-, 12- and 24-Vdc. Only few external components are required, such as a hold-up capacitor, fuse and thermistor for operation. This small easy to use design provides more flexibility with board layout. more

13: 10-W Wireless Power Solution Charges Faster and Cooler
