18V to 75V Input DC-DCs for Industrial and Telecom Systems

Ericsson Power Modules has introduced the PKB5000W series of open-frame isolated 120W eighth-brick dc-dc power modules that offer high current output and high efficiency. Importantly, the new PKB5000W module features an ultra-wide input range of 18- to 75-Vdc, which means that the device is also suitable for 24V or 48V telecom systems. Joining the recently announced PKU5510E, PKE5000 and PKE3000, the PKM5000W series expands upon Ericsson's portfolio of converters that offer highly flexible power conversion to applications that require an ultra-wide input voltage range.

The PKM5000W comes in the industry-standard through-hole eighth-brick format, measuring 58.4 x 22.9 x 9.91mm (2.3 x 0.9 x 0.39 inches). In addition to the open-frame version of the module, an optional baseplate version is also available for applications that require conduction cooling.

Offering outstanding thermal performance and derating capabilities, the module delivers very high efficiency of typically 91.5 percent at 12V full load. The single output units offer the nominal outputs of 3.3-, 5- or 12-Vdc with maximum outputs of up to 30A and 120W. Maximum outputs of specific models in the series include: the PKB5110WPI with 3.3V, 30A and 99W; the PKB5111WPI with 5V, 20A, 100W; and the PKB5113WPI with 12V, 10A and 120W.

“With the launch of the PKB5000W series, Ericsson is further expanding its extensive portfolio of high-efficiency dc-dc converter modules that offer an ultra-wide-input voltage range,” said Patrick Le Fèvre, Marketing and Communication Director, Ericsson Power Modules. “These highly flexible power converters will enable Ericsson to meet a myriad of high-density applications in telecommunications and industrial markets, in particular to support the growing demand in mini and micro radio base stations and other leading-edge networking equipment.”

The PKM5000W series operates over the –40 to +110 degrees C temperature range and provides 2250Vdc input/output (I/O) isolation meeting functional isolation and 1500V basic insulation safety requirements, according to IEC/EN/UL 60950-1. Other protection features include output-over-voltage protection; input-under-voltage shutdown; over-temperature protection; and output short-circuit protection. The module also has remote sense capability, which can be used to compensate for up to 5% voltage drops between the output pins and the point-of-load.

The PKM5000W power modules are also fitted with a remote control function – with negative and positive logic options available – allowing the product to be turned on/off by an external device such as a semiconductor or mechanical switch, providing the ability to remotely schedule load startup, for example.
