Toyota Industries Develops Fuel Cell Forklift

October 27, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Toyota Industries Corp. (Tokyo, Japan) announced that it has jointly developed with Toyota Motor Corp. (Nagoya, Japan) a fuel cell hybrid system for use in forklifts. The hybrid system, the TOYOTA FCHV-F, is to be mounted on the fuel cell forklift. The forklift incorporates a module cartridge-type frame that integrates components such as cell stacks and a high-pressure hydrogen tank, which can replace existing batteries used in electric vehicles.

The new fuel cell hybrid system also features electric double-layer capacitors that operate the fuel cell, despite interruptions in current input and output that occur when the forklift frequently starts and stops. The hybrid system utilizes Toyota's TOYOTA FC fuel cell stack, as well as fuel cell vehicle components.
