Patten Power Systems Demos Battery-Free CAT UPS

October 29, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Patten Power Systems (Elmhurst, IL) recently demonstrated the battery-free CAT® UPS by Caterpillar Inc. (Peoria, IL) and its development partner, Active Power Inc. (Austin, TX), by interrupting a simulated utility load in the form of 60kW worth of lighting to prove the efficiency of the new system.

Caterpillar and Active Power have teamed up to market the CAT UPS system to help US firms reduce the $30.0 billion in product and productivity lost annually due to power disturbances. Additionally, the confirmation of a 1,200kVA version of the CAT UPS was announced, with Caterpillar making a $1.0 million payment to Active power for meeting the technical milestone; a formal product demonstration that confirmed operation of all UPS power electronics and associated hardware at full power.
