March 14, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Ohio's first solar-school energy system under the national Million Solar Roofs Initiative was dedicated recently at Bluffsview Elementary School in Worthington, Ohio. Companies collaborating on the system included American Electric Power (AEP, Columbus, OH) and BP Solar (Fairfield, CA), as well as a number of local companies and government agencies. The program dedicated a 2,000W BP Solar energy system, consisting of 30 75W modules each measuring 21" x 47". The structure, measuring approximately 21 feet by 12 feet, is mounted on the ground and electrically connected to the school building. Internet-based software developed by AEP allows students and others to view a Website at http://www.aep.com/environment/solar to see the energy demands of the school and the amount of energy supplied by the panels.
