NiSource Energy Installs DG Technology at YMCA

September 11, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

NiSource Energy Technologies (Angola, IN), a subsidiary of NiSource Inc., announced the installation and commissioning of a combined heat and power system at the Breeden YMCA in Angola. The installation includes two 60kW microturbines and heat exchangers that use natural gas to generate electricity. The system's by-product heat will supplement heat for the domestic water supply, swimming and therapy pool water, and provide space heat for the facility.

The system will generate approximately 25 percent of the facility's summer electrical load and up to 70 percent of the winter load requirement. It is expected that the system will save the YMCA approximately 10 percent of its overall energy costs. In addition, the system's backup-generation capabilities provide increased reliability for the YMCA's critical electrical systems, which provides an added advantage since the YMCA serves as a disaster-relief center.
