October 30, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

MTI Instruments Inc. (Albany, NY), a subsidiary of Mechanical Technology Inc. (Albany, NY), announced that it has been awarded a contract from the US Air Force (USAF) for its PBS-4100 portable jet engine balancing systems. The PBS-4100 automatically collects and records aircraft engine vibration data, identifies if an engine is experiencing vibration or balance trouble, and then calculates a solution to the problem.

As part of a multi-year requirements contract, which closes in September 2004 and is potentially worth $3.1 million to the company, MTI Instruments may provide the Air Force with up to 53 PBS-4100 systems, 12 upgrade kits and 42 amplifiers. The systems are key diagnostic tools in the maintenance of aircraft engines. As part of the contract fulfillment to date, MTI Instruments received orders for 14 PBS-4100 systems and related accessories totaling $800,000.
