DaimlerChrysler AG (Stuttgart, Germany) announced that its fleet of over 100 fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) operating worldwide has hit the one-million-mile mark, saving about 50,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel in the process. The achievement has come at a price, however, as the company’s investment in fuel cell technology has surpassed a billion dollars.
The fuel cell fleet includes the company’s F-Cell passenger cars; Dodge Sprinter medium-duty, fuel-cell-powered vans; and Citaro fuel-cell-powered transit buses. DaimlerChrysler and its energy partner BP plc have also already opened two hydrogen refueling stations in Michigan.
