AM General Working on Hybrid Humvee for TACOM

June 03, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

AM General Corp. (Mishawaka, IN) has begun working to develop a hybrid diesel-electric Humvee vehicle for the US Army's Tank, Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM), which could be used to surprise the enemy with a silent electric motor.

Responding to the US Army's call for a military vehicle that runs on both fuel and electricity, AM General spokesman Craig MacNab said the Humvee, already used extensively by the Army, is a logical candidate. "They told us to find out what's out there, experiment with it, adapt it and find out how it can be used."
