VPT Unveils New HERO DC Power System

September 29, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

VPT Inc. (Blacksburg, VA), a provider of power-handling products, unveiled its new High-Efficiency, Reliability-Optimized (HERO) DC Power System for military, avionics, and space applications. The HERO power system combines a new high-efficiency, high-power dc-dc converter with a set of new, small-size point-of-load (POL) dc-dc converters in a complete system to power low-voltage devices. As a result, the new HERO Power System includes a set of new products that enable engineers to implement a dc-dc distributed power system with more efficient power delivery at the points of load, and delivers more power, with military-grade reliability, while requiring less space and cost than any high-reliability solution previously offered for these demanding applications.

The HERO Power System is a complete dc-dc power system in which all modules are available to military and avionics specifications, including temperature range, hermeticity, and screening. The HERO Power System consists of two new module offerings, the DVHE dc-dc power converter and the DVPL POL converter. All modules in the HERO Power System operate within the military temperature range of -55 °C to +125 °C with no de-rating of either input voltage or output power. The HERO Power System's high power, reliable performance, and smaller space enable engineers to produce a more efficient power design.

The DVHE power converter provides up to 50 W (10A) of power in a standard 2.110 in x 1.125 in x 0.417 in hermetic case at more than 90 percent efficiency, which is 66 percent more current than previous generations offered in the existing standard case size. Engineers can use a single DVHE to power multiple low-voltage devices instead of deploying multiple dc-dc converters. All modules are available to MIL-PRF-38534 standards for use in critical reliability applications. The DVHE features the fast transient response that is required for many processors, a MIL-STD-704 input of 16 V to 40 V with 50 V transient, a 260 kHz switching frequency, a light weight of 52g (maximum), a full military temperature range of -55 °C to +125 °C, magnetic feedback (no optocouplers), under-voltage lockout protection, remote sense, an output-voltage trim range of ±10 percent, low output noise, and an industry-standard pin out.

The DVPL POL converter is a non-isolated, synchronous, buck regulated converter that steps down the voltage at the point of end use. Multiple DVPLs can be powered from a single DVHE. Hermetically sealed and available to MIL-PRF-38534 specifications, the DVPL converter features up to 5 A/16 W of power output, 95 percent efficiency (typical), a 3.0 V to 5.5 V input range, an adjustable output voltage, output power sequencing and voltage tracking, a full military temperature range of -55 °C to +125 °C, low output noise, and 1.0 in x 0.8 in x 0.27 in metal packaging.

The new HERO Power System is immediately available. The DVHE dc-dc converter is priced at $595.00 per unit, and the DVPL POL converter is priced at $161.00 per unit, both in OEM quantities.
