April 23, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Corp. (Menlo Park, CA) announced the new Thin-Strap line of PolySwitch resettable fuses from its Raychem Circuit Protection division. The new fuses are designed to provide enhanced protection for rechargeable battery packs used in cellular phones, laptop computers, radios, camcorders and other portable equipment.

These custom-designed devices protect lithium-polymer batteries from downstream short-circuits, over-charge and other power faults. They are 0.35mm thick and are available in a variety of PolySwitch materials and ratings. Devices constructed of PolySwitch VLR material are designed to offer low resistance, enhanced thermal protection, fast time-to-trip, increased battery life and extended operation time. Devices including VTP or LTP material are designed to provide thermal protection with higher hold current capability than the VLR Series.

“The thin, low-profile form factor of this device yields a significant benefit for OEMs seeking to conserve space and reduce installation costs," stated Frank Owen, marketing director for Raychem Circuit Protection.
