TDK Innoveta Expands Full Bricks for Power Amplifiers

December 08, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

TDK Innoveta Inc. expands the Maxeta™ full brick DC-DC converter product line to include a 48Vin, 30Vout, 700W model and a 24Vin, 28Vout, 600W model offering the highest power in the industry. IFA-series modules are ideally suited for wireless applications, generating transmission power for RF power amplifiers. The new converters are RoHS compliant.

The 48Vin, 30Vout, 700W is designed for an input voltage range of 42-60V with 92% efficiency at full load, delivering greater than 126W per cubic inch. The 24Vin, 28Vout, 600W is designed for input voltage range of 19-36V with 89% efficiency at full load.

Maximum full power ratings of 48Vin, 700W (30V/23.3A) and 24Vin, 600W (28V/21.5A) are available with base plate temperatures below 85 °C. The unique open frame thermal design with IMS (insulated metal substrate), where power dissipating components are directly soldered to the baseplate, contributes lower thermal connection impedance and reduce hot spots.

As a result, high power density, high reliability, and repeatability were achieved. The converters are equipped the unique current protection of voltage foldback constant current limit which is also desirable for RF power amplifier applications.

Standard features include remote sensing, isolated remote on/off control, pre-biased start up, wide output voltage trim range of -40% to +10% and auto-recovery features to fully protect against input under and input over voltage, over-temperature, short circuit. The modules have the option for either latched or nonlatched output over voltage protection, and another option for single wire current sharing.

Base plate temperature range is -40 °C to 105 °C. Safety approvals include UL60950 (US and Canada), VDE 0805, CB scheme (IEC950), CE Mark (EN60950). The converter meets CISPR Class A/B with external filters.

Pricing for the iFA48023A300V (48Vin, 30Vout/700W) and iFA24021A280V (24Vin, 28Vout/600W) starts at $185 for 1K unit quantities. Samples are available now.
