Switching Regulators are Pin-Compatible with Linears

New Products Mar 07, 2016 by Jeff Shepard

MicroPower Direct has added the MSR7805WUP series of point-of-load switching regulators that deliver 0.5 A of output current from a miniature open-board package. Intended to replace linear regulators, the MSR7805WUP series are non-isolated , single-output devices that achieve efficiencies as high as 95% without the need for a heat sink.

Four standard models operate from inputs that range from 4.75- to 36-Vdc, providing a choice of regulated outputs including 3.3-, 5-, -5-, 12-, -12-, 15-, and -15-Vdc. All models are approved to EN 60950 safety standards and have continuous short-circuit protection. The 5-V, 12-V, and 15-V units can be easily configured to produce a negative output. MTBF per MIL HDBK 217F is greater than 2 million hours.

The MSR7805WUP series regulators measure just 0.394×0.284×0.433 in. (10×7.2×11 mm), and their pinout is compatible with LM78xx linear regulators from Linear Technology. Each model operates over the industrial temperature range of -40 to +70 degrees C without derating or heat sinking. The derate linearly above 70 degrees C and deliver 60% of rated output at 85 degrees C.
