Schaefer Announces Dead Start Auxiliary Converter

March 08, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Schaefer, Inc. has introduced a new line of converters designed for use during the "dead start" cranking for rail applications. This unit can supply power to the auxiliary control circuitry from any number of different sources including the 3rd rail centenary line.

Depending on the source, there are nine standard dc input voltage ranging from 10 to 850 Vdc, as well as AC input voltage ranges of 185-264 and 93-138 / 185-264 (switchable) Vac. 3 phase ac input voltages of 3 x 400 Vac (320-460) and 3 x 480Vac (400-530) and can be supplied with an external power factor correction module. Output power ranges from 500 W to 5000 kW. All outputs are adjustable and fully regulated to 0.2% or better (load) and 0.1% (line).

All units have remote sensing, overvoltage protection, and current limit protection on the output. Efficiencies run up to 90%. Operating temperatures available include -20°C to +75°C and -40°C to +75°C.

The units are packaged in a sealed stainless steel enclosure. Options available include decoupling diodes for parallel operation, "ruggedization", inhibit and Power fail/DC-ok. Applications include locomotive controls and communications equipment, telecommunication systems, process control systems, and power stations.

Solution pricing for this product ranges from $1800 each to $4200 each at 100 pieces, with significant OEM quantity discounts available. Delivery is 8 -10 weeks ARO.
