Saft’s New Battery Packs a Green, Safe Punch

January 23, 2021 by Nicholas St. John

Saft, has release the new Flex’ionTM Gen 2 Battery, setting a new standard for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) performance

Saft’s Flex’ionTM Gen 2 Battery, manufactured in Europe using proprietary Li-ion Super Phosphate technology, can provide up to 220 kW of power per cabinet according to Saft’s press release

According to Saft, the solution delivers 40% more power than the top competitor’s battery of the same size, is designed for mission critical applications such as data centers hospitals and in industrial applications, and is also a scalable and modular solution. On top of this, the battery is able to operate at high temperatures (up to 35oC). With these capabilities in mind, Saft’s Marketing Director, Guy-Patrick de Broglie ensures that data centers and other applications requiring a UPS can look to Saft’s Flex’ionTM battery for reliable use with short lead times and a five-year warranty from the company.

In terms of safety, the new battery is also engineered for safety, passing the certification for rigorous standards UL 1973, UL 9540A, NFPA 855 and the ICC international fire code, IFC 2018 standards. The fire compliance specifically allows the battery to be used within a system without a fire suppression system, and also does not require an air gap of three feet from one cabinet to the next.

The elimination of this air gap is one of many reasons that Saft’s Flex’ionTM solution is also an economically conscious solution. This air gap along with the battery’s inherent small footprint allows an overall minimized system footprint. Along with the fact that its lithium ion technology is six times lighter than valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries and an overall lifetime upwards of 20 years with minimal maintenance, the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the system that Saft’s Flex’ionTM Gen 2 battery will be implemented in.

Now, not only is Saft’s Flex’ionTM Gen 2 Battery cheaper, lighter, smaller and safer than the competition, it is also greener. The battery’s ability to operate at high temperatures allows for a drastic reduction in the Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) requirements, which thus minimizes the energy and carbon emissions required to properly control the system’s temperature. The battery’s chemistry also consists of less than 1% cobalt, and all of the materials are obtained from responsible suppliers under the Responsible Materials Initiative (RMI) that allows high sustainability and low environmental impact of battery manufacturing.

The Saft Flex’ionTM Gen 2 battery is an across the board improvement to the current competition of batteries for data centers and missions critical UPS applications. The engineering design takes advantage of system optimizations via the high operating temperatures and minimal sizing of the battery. As batteries become a more central part of our technology when purely electrical power replaces fossil-fuel based generators, along with current UPS applications, batteries like Saft’s will pave the way to a greener, safer and more powerful future.
