Powerex Intros 6-kA GCT and Gate Driver

Powerex, Inc. has introduced to the North American Market what it claims is the world’s largest Gate Controlled Turn-Off Thyristor (GCT) and Gate Driver pair. The new pair incorporates an asymmetrical GCT that is manufactured complete from a single, six-inch diameter silicon wafer. The GCT unit is rated at 6000 Volts, with a turn off current capability of 6000 Amperes.

The new device pair is suitable for use in medium voltage AC Drives and inverters for high voltage utility power systems. They are particularly suitable for high reliability applications that require many on/off power cycles.

These devices are tailored to specific customer requirements. As a result, samples are available 12-16 weeks after customer specific requirements are established. Depending upon the specific customer needs, evaluation samples will range in price from $5,400 to $6,000.
