Power Integrations Adds LinkSwitch-XT to IC Family

New Products Nov 08, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Power Integrations Inc. (San Jose, CA), a supplier of high-voltage integrated circuits used in power conversion semiconductor technology, introduced its new LinkSwitch-XT, the latest addition to its portfolio of ICs designed for low-wattage power supplies. The LinkSwitch-XT is targeted for applications in which tight regulation of output voltage and current are key design priorities. The new ICs support universal-input (85 Vac to 265 Vac) chargers and adapters with output levels of up to 4 W, and may be used in open-frame applications up to 9 W (230 Vac).

The LinkSwitch-XT with EcoSmart® technology is suitable for use in chargers and adapters designed to comply with energy-efficiency standards for external power supplies. The simple ON/OFF control scheme of the LinkSwitch-XT enables a high level of efficiency even at light loads, and reduces no-load consumption to less than 300 mW. The use of a transformer with a bias winding further reduces no-load consumption to less than 50 mW. The LinkSwitch-XT features a 700 V power MOSFET together with control circuitry on a single silicon die. Integrated safety and reliability features include hysteretic thermal shutdown for over-temperature protection, as well as auto-restart for output short-circuit and open-loop protection.

The LinkSwitch-XT is available in lead-free, plastic, through-hole, DIP-8 and surface-mountable SMD-8 packages. Pricing in 1,000-piece quantities for the 2.6 W LNK362PN (DIP-8 package) is $0.53 each. The 6 W LNK364PN is priced at $0.55 each. Small quantities of each type are available from factory stock, with production quantities available four weeks ARO. The new product family is also supported by a reference design kit, the DAK-89, which includes a fully tested 6.2 V, 322 mA adapter; an engineering test report; and product samples.
