Modular Devices Releases Hybrid PoL Switching Regulators for Satellite Applications

November 29, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Modular Devices, Inc. announced the availability of compact Proton Rad Hard 100K+™ high efficiency synchronous buck regulators. The Model 5080 delivers reliable on-board low voltage dc power to critical loads precisely where needed.

Developing up to 10W in a range of low voltage outputs from an intermediate 12Vdc input, the 5080 POLs achieve operating efficiencies of over 90%. Their small low profile, conduction-cooled hermetic package make system design and integration simple. Powering FPGAs at the system specific location, the 5080s offer satellite and space electronics system designers new options for volume and weight savings.

"Model 5080 fills the need for efficiently providing a low voltage, high current source to power radiation hardened applications," said President, Steven Summer.

Standard features include inhibit for logic level on-off control, frequency synchronization, built in test, current telemetry and interconnects for easy, reliable paralleling for higher current output and N+1 redundancy.

The flight heritage design is SEU resistant (LET>82MeVcm²/mg) and radiation hard (TID>100kRadSi). The MDI 100K+ Proton Rad Hard converters eliminate the use of optocouplers to maximize proton resistance. Both through-hole PCB and chassis mount packages are available.

5080s are available in a range of grades starting with the engineering units for laboratory development use. Space flight parts, which are fully environmentally screened and qualification tested, are the optimum choice for 125°C continuous duty high reliability space applications. The factory offers complete applications assistance and supports comprehensive data sheets and application notes for reference.
