Maximum Mobility with Universal Battery

September 28, 2015 by Jeff Shepard

With its GreenPack® lithium-ion rechargeable battery, Berlin-based Constin GmbH has developed a universal battery module that is equally suited for both mobile and stationary applications. The replaceable battery system is designed for the smooth operation of electric bubble cars, mopeds, motorcycles and scooters as well as industrial vacuum cleaners and lawn mowers. Furthermore, it can also be used to store solar electricity and electricity from the utility grid.

Covestro, formerly Bayer MaterialScience, recognized early on the importance of electromobility for resource-efficient and climate-compatible transportation and supports its development partners with the choice of materials, color development and processing. Constin is a specialist for the design, development, construction and production of innovative applications. GreenPack GmbH has been established to distribute the GreenPack rechargeable batteries.

The green housing of the GreenPack® is made of the flame-retardant polycarbonate-ABS blend Bayblend® FR3010; the cell holder of its sister product, Bayblend® FR3040. “The products are characterized by good ductility and flowability, and can be processed quickly and economically,” said Dr. Constantin Schwecke, Covestro expert for polycarbonate applications in the electromobility segment. Thanks to the robust plastics, the batteries can be replaced quickly and safely.

With a wall thickness of 1.5 millimeters, the flame-retardant grades achieve the high classification of UL 94V V-0 in the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) flame retardance test. Bayblend® FR3040 even achieves this classification at 0.75 millimeters. “The first GreenPack® battery modules are currently undergoing testing,” said Constin Managing Director Hans Constin. “We expect the market launch over the course of the next four months. Samples are available for prospective customers.”

One noteworthy invention by designer Hans Constin is the kickTrike. This small, three-wheeled electric scooter moves easily through city traffic yet also has space for the weekend’s shopping, two beverage crates or a child, as the inventor demonstrates in this video (www.kicktrike.com). The GreenPack® battery module also supplies the electricity here. The lithium-ion battery is good for a range of around 50 kilometers on a single charge. To ensure drivers reach their destination, there is also space for a spare module – just in case.
