LTC Unveils LTC3406B Synchronous-Buck Regulator

September 08, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Linear Technology Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced its new LTC3406B, a high-efficiency, 1.5MHz, synchronous-buck regulator that can deliver up to 600mA of continuous output current from a tiny ThinSOT™ package. The new device features continuous pulse-width modulated operation without going into Burst Mode® to ensure low noise operation under all load conditions. The LTC3406B uses a constant-frequency, current-mode architecture and operates from an input-voltage range of 2.5V to 5.5V making it suitable for single-cell, lithium-ion, multi-cell alkaline or nickel-metal-hydride applications.

The LTC3406B can provide output voltages as low as 0.6V, enabling it to power the latest generation of low-voltage DSPs. The device's 1.5MHz switching frequency allows the utilization of tiny, low-cost capacitors and inductors less than 1mm in height. The combination of the tiny externals, a ThinSOT package, and low noise make the LTC3406B optimal for hand-held applications with onboard noise-sensitive circuitry. The LTC3406B uses internal switches with an RDS(on) of only 0.40½ to deliver efficiencies as high as 96 percent. It also utilizes low-dropout, 100-percent, duty-cycle operation to allow output voltages equal to VIN, further extending battery run-time. Furthermore, the regulator is stable with ceramic capacitors, achieving very low output-voltage ripple.

The LTC3406B is available with an adjustable output, or as a fixed 1.5V or 1.8V output. All versions are available from stock in a five-lead, ThinSOT package. Pricing starts at $1.95 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
