HP Intros Monitored PDUs for Three-Phase Power

November 07, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP, Houston, TX) introduced its new three-phase monitored power distribution units (PDUs), which include the HP 17.3 k VA S348 monitored PDU for North America/Japan, and the HP 22.1 kVA S332 monitored PDU for international configurations. The PDUs support rack-mount applications with three-phase power in and single-phase power out. A local power display on the PDU delivers the ability to set up and configure the PDU and monitor the PDU power for RMS current, status, and overload conditions. The HP monitored PDU is a single-feed model with 12 C-19 outlets, suitable for 1U blade power enclosures, and fits 22U to 47U racks.

The new family of PDUs with power monitoring provides the needed power to support servers, storage, networking, and other infrastructure equipment. The HP monitored PDU fits in any side of the rack with power cords extending from either the bottom or top of the rack. For input feeds, the unit has 12 C19 receptacles with color-coded load identification for all receptacles, display and circuit breakers. The three-phase PDU delivers single-phase power to equipment.

The monitored PDU provides local power display. The front panel has a two-digit, seven-segment LED digital display, which shows the current in each circuit breaker; a scroll button to scroll through values; and six LEDs, which indicate current overloads and voltage out of range conditions. Current monitoring consists of two-digit RMS current, with load segment LEDs reporting three different conditions ("normal" 0 percent to 80 percent; "caution" 80 percent to 102 percent; "warning" >102 percent). Voltage monitoring measures over-voltage and under-voltage on any output load segment. Remote power monitoring is available with an optional serial SNMP card.

The HP 17.3 kVA S348 Monitored PDU is available now, priced at $1,499 for the US version. Pricing may vary by country or region for the international HP 22.1 kVA S332 Monitored PDU.
