Gresham Offers Communications-Grade Inverters

March 15, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

The Quasar Inverter from Gresham Power is offered in three models, rated at 250VA, 500Va and 1,000VA with nominal input voltages of either 48Vdc or 24Vdc. The Quasar is based on Gresham's long experience of MIL systems and employs inherently low noise, high reliability technology.

The major application area for the Quasar inverter has long been telecom and mobile phone infrastructure where systems builders have found many uses for this product to provide high quality mains power from 48Vdc battery powered systems. This mains power may then be used to supply "of the shelf" equipment such as PC's, Monitors, modems, CCTV and alarm systems for remote locations and even emergency lighting. An optional psophometric filter completes the package for eliminating noise over voice networks.

Jake Moir, MD of Gresham comments, "The Quasar is a very versatile piece of equipment and even we don't know all the uses it has been put to! It can really be a problem solver for mobile applications or as part of a test system or even no-break power where a reliable DC supply is available. It has field proven high reliability and has been used extensively by major telecomms OEMs."

The output waveform is a true sine wave with less than 5% total harmonic distortion and the output is protected against short circuit and overload. The input is protected against reverse voltage connection and features automatic shutdown at low input voltage to protect supply batteries from damaging complete discharge. The Quasar has internal fan cooling, thermal protection and operates over the temperature range 0°C to +50°C. Load regulation is typically 1% for a 0 to 100% load change and reliability is calculated at 90,000 hours per MIL-HDBK-217E.

The Quasar inverters comply with EN60950 and EN55022-B and are designed to meet telecom psophometric noise requirements of ETS300-132-2 when used with the optional QPF1000 filter module. DC input connection is via stud terminals and the ac output is from screw connection strip or optional socket packs for IEC connectors or numerous international standard outlets. The Quasar has a steel enclosure to IP20 and rack-mounting kits are available. A remote on/off function is standard and an optional "monitor" card may be specified to provide indication of Output OK, Input OK, Battery Low, Over Current and Over Temperature.

Quasar inverters are designed for use in telecomms infrastructure, vehicle and mobile systems, security/power protection installations and as a low cost, high quality frequency converter for test systems or part of a no-break power/UPS system.
