EPCOS Announces New MKK440-D-56-01 PFC Capacitors

July 26, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

EPCOS AG (Germany) announced its new MKK440-D-56-01 power-factor correction (PFC) capacitors in the PhaseCap® HD Series, which are rated at 56 kVar for a supply voltage of 440 V at 50 Hz, making it possible to implement a 50 kVar stage with just one capacitor (two 28 kVar capacitors were previously needed to obtain a 50 kVar stage in a PFC system with a detuning level of 7 percent in a 400 V grid). The new MKK440-D-56-01 type power capacitors are used for power-factor correction, as well as to reduce distortion and harmonics in the grid, thus improving and stabilizing power quality.

Special customer benefits include a lower space requirement in switching cabinets and simplified logistics. Installation time and costs are also cut. The capacitor is rated at 3 µF x 307 µF for a rated current of 74 A. The new MKK440-D-56-01 capacitors are self-healing and PCB-free. The mean life expectancy of the capacitor is 115,000 hours at 5,000 switching operations per year.
