Cherokee International Presents New COM1 Power Supplies

February 24, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Cherokee International LLC (Tustin, CA) announced the COM1, a 240W ac/dc power supply for low-profile datacom and telecom equipment. The four-channel power supply meets present 1U (1.75in) requirements for server and router applications. Two dedicated channels support low voltage 1.5V to 3.3V outputs at a high current of 50A per channel for logic-level requirements. The remaining two channels provide 5V at 5A and 12V at 4A intended to power analog circuitry or fans. Suitable for equipment with centralized power, the COM1 packs 240W into a 7in x 4.5in x 1.35in footprint — 5.6W per cubic inch. Cherokee’s COM1 meets EMI Class B regulations and input-surge requirements.

With active current sharing available on all four outputs, power scalability is simple. Multiple COM1 power supplies can be wired together for redundancy, N+1 and extended power capabilities. Inversely, power supplies can also be wired together to reduce the power used and increase reliability through lowering the load stress. In addition, Cherokee uses synchronous rectification with ultra-low resistance MOSFET transistors to minimize output losses and to reduce system cooling requirements. The COM1 further provides over-temperature shutdown, over-load and under-voltage protection, along with power fail and global output good signals.

Pricing for 500-piece quantities is $234. The COM1 is shipping now with five models available to fit numerous telecom and datacom applications.
