Calex Announces Hold Up Module For DC-DC Converters

September 07, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

Calex Mfg. Co., Inc. announced the availability of the Calex Hold Up and Hold Up Light product offering. The Hold Up modules are designed for use with Calex dc-dc converters to protect against brown-out and temporary power loss conditions and provide a clean, uninterrupted source of power for downstream circuitry. The Hold Up model, part number HU-28, is said to provide a complete turn-key solution for easy design integration. The Hold Up Light model, part number HUL-28, requires the use of an external capacitor bank in addition to the HUL module.

The HU-28 and HUL-28 have an input range of 15.5 to 36Vdc. Both the HU-28 and HUL-28 offer user programmable hold-up trip voltage. Both modules have two modes of operation: "stand-by" and "tripped". During stand-by, the module charges the hold up capacitors to 45V and maintains that voltage. When tripped, the module stops charging the hold-up capacitors and connects them to the Vout pins. The mode of operation is determined by the value of the input voltage in relation to the preset trip voltage.

The HU-28 and HUL-28 response time is 5µs. The switching frequency of the HU-28 and HUL-28 is 310kHz. Reflected ripple is 40mA peak to peak. Both units can provide up to 200W of hold up output power. Isolation baseplate to input is 700Vdc. The operating temperature range for both models is -40 to 100C. MTBF per MIL-STD-217F is in excess of 350,000 hours. The HU-28 is housed in a standard half brick package measuring 2.28 x 2.40 x 0.50". The HUL-28 is housed in a standard quarter brick package measuring 2.28 x 1.45 x 0.50".
