AnalogicTech’s AAT1121 Targets Space-Constrained Applications

April 25, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc. (AnalogicTech) announced the AAT1121, a new step-down converter for space-constrained portable applications. Mounted in a 2 x 2 x 0.85 mm TDFN package, this new device offers 250mA output current at up to 96% efficiency.

"Bluetooth headsets, ultra-thin digital still cameras, and a growing number of other portable electronic devices need a step-down converter that delivers relatively low power with high efficiency in a very small footprint," noted Bill Weiss, Product Line Director for AnalogicTech. "The AAT1121 is an ideal voltage conversion solution for these applications. In a tiny 2x2mm package using very small external components, the AAT1121 supplies the right amount of current with high efficiency over the entire load range."

The AAT1121 operates over a 2.7 to 5.5 Vdc input range with an output as low as 0.6 Vdc. With efficiency as high as 96%, the AAT1121 maintains a 30µA no load quiescent current. The device also uses a 1.5MHz switching frequency that reduces the size of external components. A high-dc gain error amplifier with internal compensation controls the output and provides good transient response and load regulation. The AAT1121 offers both current limit and over-temperature protection. Soft-start circuitry limits current surge at input and eliminates output voltage overshoot.

Specified over the -40oC to +85oC temperature range, the AAT1121 is available in an 8-pin, 2 x 2 x 0.85 mm TDFN package. The device sells for $0.76 in 1000-piece quantities.
