3A Synchronous Buck Regulator Delivers Simplicity and Space Savings

August 25, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. today expanded its microBUCK® family of integrated synchronous buck regulators with a new 3 A device offering a fixed 650 kHz switching frequency and a wide input voltage range of 4.5 V to 15 V. The Vishay Siliconix SiP12116 combines high-side and low-side n-channel MOSFETs with current-mode, constant on-time (CM-COT) control in the space-saving 3 mm by 3 mm DFN10 package with thermal pad, providing designers with a complete buck regulator design in only 100 mm².

Featuring integrated compensation, the SiP12116 enables simplified designs with minimal components, making the device ideal for point of load regulation and 5 V and 12 V rails in a wide range of space-constrained computing, consumer electronics, telecom, and industrial applications. Typical end products will include DSPs, FPGAs, ASICs, high-density storage cards, TVs, set-top boxes, distributed power systems, servers, and more.

The device released today provides an adjustable output voltage down to 0.6 V with ± 2 % accuracy, while its integrated MOSFETs offer peak efficiency of up to 95 %. The SiP12116's CM-COT control delivers ultra-fast transient response with minimum output capacitance, tight ripple regulation at light loads, and no ESR requirements while ensuring that the regulator supports all multilayer ceramic chip (MLCC) capacitors. The device features a built-in soft start of 1 ms.

The SiP12116 offers a full protection feature set, including cycle-by-cycle current limit, short circuit protection (SCP), over temperature protection (OTP), input under-voltage lockout (UVLO), and a power good function. Samples and production quantities of the new integrated buck regulator are available now, with lead times of 10 to 12 weeks for larger orders. Pricing for U.S. delivery in 1,000-piece quantities starts at $0.62 each.
