0.33mm-High Power Management Devices for Smart Cards

Torex Semiconductor Ltd. has enhanced its lineup of ultra-low profile molded package products with a height of only 0.33mm (max.) for smart cards. To meet these needs, Torex has developed a molded-type ultra-low profile package with more strength to withstand bending and twisting than the CSP package, and has added this package its lineups of dc-dc converters, charge pump ICs, lithium ion charger ICs, series regulators, line switch ICs, and voltage detectors. This newly added package is the thinnest class in the industry and is an ideal product for the power specifications of smart cards.

Smart cards have come into common use in recent years. The number of cards issued has jumped dramatically and fields of use are becoming increasingly diverse, including official authentication documents (licenses, passports, ID cards), access control (employee ID cards, student ID cards, secure area access), medical cards (health insurance cards, consultation tickets), payment cards (credit, debit, bank cards), and information security (network transactions, data access control).

The ISO/IEC 7810 international standard specifies the dimensions and thickness of smart cards (54.98mm x 85.60mm x 0.760mm). Models with a display or finger print authentication function have recently appeared, and these advances are expected to create a new demand for power ICs such as voltage regulators and battery charger ICs.

Due to the thickness specification (0.76mm) for smart cards, there is a growing need for power ICs and external devices that have been miniaturized to a height no more than 0.4mm and are sufficiently strong to withstand bending and twisting of the smart card. Low-profile packages and associated devices include the following:

The USPQ-4B05 (1.0 x 1.0 x h0.33) houses the Voltage Detector XC6129 series that features: Accuracy of ±0.8% (Ta=25 degrees C); Quiescent Current of 0.42μA (Detect VDF=2.7V); Detect Voltage Range of 1.5V to 5.5V (0.1V increments); Operating Voltage Range of 1.3V to 6.0V; Output Configuration is N-channel open drain or CMOS output; Output Logic is H level or L level at detection; External capacitor type delay function with Release Delay Time; and Manual Reset Function.

The USP-6B06 (1.5 x 1.8 x h0.33) houses the Single Type Voltage Regulators XC6215 Series that features: Maximum Output Current of 200mA (Vout=3.0V, Vin=4.0V); Dropout Voltage of 320mV @ Iout=100mA, (Vout=3.0V); Operating Voltage Range of 1.5V to 6.0V; Output Voltage of 0.9 to 5.0V (0.1V increments); Accuracy of ±2% (1.5<Vout (T) ≦ 5.0V); Low Quiescent Current of 0.8μA.

The USP-6B06 (1.5 x 1.8 x h0.33) also houses the Load Switches XC8102 Series that features: On Resistance of 0.31Ω @ Vin=4.0V and 0.52Ω @ Vin=1.8V; Input Voltage Range of 1.2 to 6.0V; Quiescent Current of 3.6μA @ Viin=2.9V; Stand-by Current of 0.1μA; Protection Circuits include, Current limit, Short Circuit Protection, Short current 30mA; and ON/OFF Function with High Active Enable.

The USP-6B07 (1.8 x 2.0 x h0.33) houses the Battery Charge ICs XC6805 Series that features: Operating Voltage Range of 4.5V to 6V; Quiescent Current of 100μA; CC Charge Current of 5mA to 40mA that can be set by external resistance; CV Charge Voltage of 4.2V that is internally fixed; Protection Circuits include, Thermistor detection function (except for the XC6805xN), Safety timer function, UVLO (Under Voltage Lockout), Thermal shutdown, Dropout voltage monitor function, Charging over-voltage monitor function, Charging over-current monitor function, and Recharge function.

The USP-8B05 (2.4 x 2.0 x h0.33) houses the Step-Up Charge Pump XC9801/XC9802 Series that features: Input Current of 80μA; Output Current of 80mA (3.6V to 5V step-up); Oscillation Frequency of 300kHz; Stand-by Current of 2.0μA; Output Voltage Range of 2.5V to 6.0V; Input Voltage Range of 1.8V to 5.5V

The LGA-8B01 (1.4 x 1.2 x h0.3) houses the Step-Down DC/DC XC9259 Series that features: Input Voltage Range of 2.5V to 5.5V; Output Voltage Range of 0.8V to 3.6V (±2.0%); Oscillation Frequency of 6.0MHz; Protection functions include Thermal Shut Down, Current Limit, and Short Circuit Protection (TypeB); and Control Functions include Soft-start, UVLO, and CL Discharge (TypeB).
