US Navy to Deploy Federal Solar-Electric System

November 10, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

The US Navy announced that it has deployed the largest federal solar photovoltaic system in the nation, which is a solar-electric carport at the Naval Base Coronado in San Diego. The installation is comprised of two contiguous solar arrays, covering a half-mile-long parking structure that serves US Navy personnel. The system generates enough energy to power more than 935 homes.

The 750kW solar-electric system was implemented as part of an Energy Savings Performance Contract project developed by NORESCO (Westborough, MA). The photovoltaic system was designed, manufactured and installed by PowerLight Corp. (Berkeley, CA). The photovoltaic system will produce approximately 1,244,000kWh per year and is expected to save over $228,000 in annual operating costs by avoiding purchases of expensive peak electricity.
