Safety Standard expected to Increase Competitiveness of Chinese Li-ions

August 02, 2015 by Jeff Shepard

The Chinese first mandatory standard, GB 31241-2014 for Lithium-ion cells and batteries used in portable electronic equipment -- Safety requirements, was officially implemented on August 1, 2015. From now on, lithium-ion cells and batteries contained in mobile power, mobile phones, laptop computers, digital cameras and other portable electronic equipment have to pass a series of tests to ensure that they are safe, and then they can be sold in the market.

Compared with other rechargeable batteries, lithium-ion cells and batteries have advantages of higher voltage, higher energy density, pollution-free, fast charge, low self-discharge rate and so on. They are widely used in mobile power banks, laptop computers, digital cameras and other products closely related to people's lives. Cells and batteries are the key components of all digital devices; they are not only related to the operation duration of equipment, but are also the key elements of the safety of equipment. Poor quality of lithium-ion cells and batteries will cause fire, explosion and other accidents, and also lead to people's property loss; serious accidents can endanger the safety of life.

That is the reason that China is implementing GB 31241-2014. Once the GB 31241-2014 is fully-implemented, some unqualified manufacturers or factories and their products are expected to be eliminated, the reputation of corporate brand will emerge in the market, the consumers will more and more chase after the high quality and safety. In the future, we absolutely have reasons to believe that the brand concentration ratio will be enhanced in the market of lithium-ion cells and batteries, and the batteries made in China are expected to excel Japanese and South Korean batteries and will become the safest batteries in the world.

According to relevant regulations in China, the lithium-ion cells and batteries produced by enterprise must be submitted to the laboratories authorized by relevant government departments to be subject to the tests regulated in GB 31241-2014.Recently, the Shenzhen NTEK Testing Technology Co., Ltd., the professional battery certification and testing provider, successfully obtained the testing qualification of GB 31241-2014. That means the test reports of GB 31241-2014 issued by NTEK can be approved by the certification body and directly used to apply CQC certificates. In addition, NTEK can be based on the latest Indian and South Korean requirements to apply BIS and KC certification.
