PMBus Forum Releases Specification Revision 1.0

March 28, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

The Power Management Bus Implementers Forum, which supports the advancement and early adoption of the PMBus protocol for power management, announced that revision 1.0 of the PMBus Power System Management Protocol Specification has now been completed and is available to the public. The specification consists of two parts: Part I - General Requirements, Transport and Electrical Interface, and Part II - Command Language.

New "working groups" are being formed to advance the PMBus specifications, as well as groups to address the following: reference graphical user interface, production programming, user's manual, compliance testing and assurance, bridges to other transports and protocols, and PMBus promotion and marketing. Part I of the specification can be downloaded at:

Part II of the specification can be downloaded at:

The PMBus protocol initiative is a collaborative venture by the industry to establish the first truly open communications standard for the digital control of power systems. Implemented over the industry-standard SMBus serial interface, the PMBus protocol will facilitate the programming, control and real-time monitoring of compliant power conversion products.
