Intelligent Charging gives EVs and the Smart Grid a Boost

OSIsoft and eMotorWerks announced that eMotorWerks has incorporated OSIsoft's PI System within its cloud-based Smart charging platform through a Connected Services Agreement. This new solution will further optimize EV charging while improving grid stability. The solution will provide scalable real-time data storage, real-time availability, and streamlined data flows between eMotorWerks' platform and Independent Service Operators, Regional Transmission Operators, utilities, and any other energy balancing authorities.

Through improved real-time visibility of major grid parameters and consumer EV charging demand, eMotorWerks helps grid operators and utilities improve load distribution and grid stability while minimizing needs for expensive generation or transmission & distribution infrastructure upgrades.

Integrated into eMotorWerks’ JuiceNet platform is OSIsoft’s PI System that combines sensor-based data from eMotorWerks’ network of JuiceBox charging stations with data from electrical utilities and Independent System Operators (ISO’s). The result is a robust, complete overview of charging loads and real-time grid conditions used in the JuiceNet load dispatch algorithms, providing eMotorWerks EV customers with faster, easier, and more secure access to the status of their charging stations.

Growing EV popularity presents an increasing challenge and opportunity to grid operators and utilities, accounting for large, synchronized loads on the electric grid and undesirable demand peaks. By incorporating algorithms with user-configurable parameters to automatically manage these highly shiftable loads, eMotorWerks offers a smarter, cleaner, and more predictable grid load to support the growing number of EVs. With up to 10 million electric vehicles expected on the US roads by 2025, intelligent management of EV charging loads is a critical capability for the national grid.

“We are thrilled to be working with OSIsoft, as they are the recognized leader for operational intelligence across all segments of the energy industry. The PI System is used as the data infrastructure at all ISOs and RTOs in the US, and is therefore a natural choice for us to leverage for delivering superior service," said Valery Miftakhov, eMotorWerks’ Founder. "Our JuiceBox and JuiceNet solutions help grid operators and utilities manage large distributed EV charging loads, and help consumers be more efficient in their charging habits. This is critical as electric vehicles become more prevalent in the marketplace. The PI System will allow us to significantly streamline the delivery of these valuable services."

“We are excited to work with eMotorWerks as our first established EVSE partner,” said Patrick Kennedy, CEO at OSIsoft. “Their focus on providing value for the customer - be it price, portability, or power capability - is consistent with our approach. As the distributed energy market begins to proliferate, we see eMotorWerks’ business model as the ideal way to optimize value for both customers and the electric grid. As all of the ISO’s in the US are also our customers, it enables a seamless integration between distributed assets and energy markets.”

"The JuiceBox SmartGrid EVSE is a perfect example of how the Internet of Things (IoT) is changing market dynamics in ways we could not have imagined," said Martin Otterson, Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Industry at OSIsoft. “The PI System is a perfect complement to the thought leadership that eMotorWerks has brought to the table and representative of how the PI System can transform business models through connection and access to a network of historical and real-time data."
