June 04, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Ener1 Inc. (Fort Lauderdale, FL) has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract by the Missile Defense Agency (Department of Defense) to develop special cathode materials and electrolytes for high energy density lithium batteries. Funding for Ener1's contract will be provided by the Missile Defense Agency's SBIR/STTR program and supports the company's goal of pursuing military contracts.

"This award represents a very significant achievement for our company," said Ron Stewart, Ener1 chief executive officer. "Our SBIR work for the Missile Defense Agency will give us an opportunity to further demonstrate the importance of our high-energy lithium battery technologies for both government and commercial applications. Our work on this project can lead not only to new funding in subsequent phases but also to government and commercial use of our technologies."
