XP Power Offers 60W AC-DC PSU That Conforms To Military EMI Standards

September 17, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

XP Power announced the launch of its MCM series of rugged, metal-cased convection cooled power supplies that are suitable for deployment in harsh and physically demanding environments. In addition, the series offers EMI performance to MIL-STD 461E/F standards, conducted and radiated, for emissions and susceptibility.

Sealed against dust and water, the unit’s metal case is equipped with fixing holes for mounting on an equipment shelf or fitting inside customer equipment. The casing also helps remove heat, allowing the unit to operate at higher temperatures.

Manufactured in the USA, the supplies suit equipment designed for US government contracts. Typically these projects stipulate using a high percentage of components made in the United States. The MCM series has been developed to a higher specification than conventional laptop power supplies using commercial off the shelf (COTS) materials, these are said to help reduce costs and lead-time.

Within the series 5 models are available, providing output voltages of 12, 15, 18, 24 or 28Vdc. Input voltage is in the range of 90 – 264Vac or 120 – 370 Vdc. The supplies operate at full output power between -40 to +50°C, and derate linearly to 50% load at + 70°C. The units comply with UL60950-1 and EN60950-1 safety approvals for industrial, commercial and IT equipment. A 28Vin version designed for use in military vehicles thats meets MIL-STD 461E/F and MIL-STD 1275A-E will also be available shortly.

Measuring 5.5 x 2.75 x 1.48" (139.7 x 69.8 x 37.6mm), the unit has a 5 pin DIN plug standard output connector. Optional output connectors include D-Sub, Lemo Barrel, customer specific or no connector. Typical applications include defense, geo-physical, heavy industrial, secure communications and mobile computing.

The MCM is priced at $180 in OEM volumes.
